Court rules government metadata is public record

Under a ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court, metadata created or retained by any government entity in the course of its official duties must be released as a public record in the form that it is kept by the agency. The ruling means that databases and statistical information that government agencies maintain to do their  business is now accessible to members of the public. For example, an agency may not insist on giving a requester a printout or PDF of a record that is maintained electronically – it must give up the entire database.
